Xbox One backwards compatibility

Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida calls Xbox One backwards compatibility “interesting”

Although most of the world has decided (for reasons unknown to yours truly) that Sony had the better press conference at E3 2015, Microsoft dealt a sizable blow to Sony with its announcement of Xbox One backwards compatibility. Considering the Xbox 360‘s swathes of games, that’s actually a formidable extra library that the Xbox One has just acquired. And Sony’s response is? “Interesting,” Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida says. To illustrate just what a feat Microsoft has accomplished with the Xbox One backwards compatibility, Yoshida says that “Backward compatibility is hard. I won’t say we’ll never do it, but it’s not an easy thing to do. If it was easy we would have done that,” which sounds awfully like a backhanded compliment. Furthermore, backwards compatibility doesn’t work with Sony’s current PlayStation Now model which makes you pay a subscription to play PS3 games which are featured in its library. We get the feeling that Sony wasn’t expecting ...

Pachter: Xbox One price “will never go back up” from $349

The Xbox One had a pretty shaky opening year, trailing its direct competitor, the PS4, in sales for almost the entire year. Thankfully, Microsoft eventually realized that not everybody needed a Kinect, taking that out of the standard bundle, and following that up with a $50 discount, bringing its price down to $349. That price was introduced as a temporary price for Thanksgiving, but on January 16th, a statement was made that “Effective tomorrow, we have a special promotional pricing of $349”. One would think that this is just a continuation of that Thanksgiving deal, but games industry analyst Michael Pachter doesn’t think so. “It’s not officially a price cut – it’s promotional pricing. This allows the retailer to advertise regularly $399 and now it’s $349, but I have a feeling it will never go back up.” says Pachter And Pachter thinks it’s a lot to do with the way ...

Xbox One sales continue to outpace PS4 in the U.S. in November and December

Even as an Xbox fan, I have to admit that the Xbox One didn’t put up much of a fight for most of 2014. The story was the same, month after month, with Sony’s PS4 dominating sales – that is, until Black Friday. That was when Microsoft discounted its console by $50, bringing it down to $349 USD and has since done some dominating of its own with Xbox One sales. Microsoft just announced that the Xbox One was the top-selling console in November and December in the U.S. saying that the next-gen platform is outselling the Xbox 360 by “50 percent at the same point in its lifecycle”. As a celebration, and presumably a sound marketing strategy, Microsoft is keeping the Xbox One at its limited time pricing of $349 which is sure to jump start its console sales to start of 2015. Speaking about the milestone and new promotion, ...

Xbox draws blood for the first time: Xbox One outsold the PS4 in November

With a price cut of $50 and shopping for the Holiday season rife, it’s no surprise to see that the Xbox One has finally come out on top in the NPD‘s November report. The news that the Xbox One outsold the PS4 in November dropped just this week, and Microsoft was quick to celebrate, saying: “November set a new record for sales of Xbox One, and Xbox One was the best-selling console in the US and UK. “Response to the holiday lineup of games on Xbox One was incredible, with Xbox One fans buying more games in November in the US than any other gen eight platform and enjoying over 357 million hours of gameplay globally. “In fact, more fans logged into Xbox Live across Xbox One and Xbox 360, and enjoyed more entertainment, than any other month in the history of Xbox. We love to see the excitement from our ...

Final Fantasy VII on PS4

Final Fantasy VII on PS4 is now going to be a reality in 2015

With every successive Sony PlayStation generation, the questioning gets stronger: will Final Fantasy VII be brought to this platform? Well, it seems Sony has finally listened (or caved in) and will be putting Final Fantasy VII on PS4 in Spring 2015. The news was announced today at PlayStation Experience which announced a whole number of other PS4 exclusives like Uncharted 4, Yakuza 5 and Persona 5. Unfortunately, it won’t be the remastered Final Fantasy VII that we’ve all been pining for – it will probably be closer to a port of the PC version released not too long ago – but at least it’s happening at all. It will still possess the blocky graphics from when the game was first released on the original PlayStation in 1997, though some might say this will make the nostalgic experience even better. I have to say, this is the first time that I’ve truly ...

20 years of PlayStation

20 years of PlayStation celebrated with a PSone themed grey PS4

20 years ago, Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) launched one of the most important consoles in video game history: the original Sony PlayStation. Since then, there have been three additions to the PlayStation family, culminating in the PS4, and to celebrate 20 years of PlayStation, SCE is making a limited edition PS4 that is themed like – you guessed it – a PlayStation. The matte grey exterior that graces the console, controller and camera brings back many fond memories, though you’ll have to be ready if you want to make good on that nostalgia – SCE is only making 12,300 of the limited edition consoles which will go up for pre-order on December 6th. Still, if you can’t get your hands on the limited edition PS4, there is also a PSone theme for the PS4 that Sony has made available recently, which even includes that iconic start-up sound. Although I am ...

Black Friday sales show that the Xbox One outsold the PS4 by large margin

We’ve known for quite some time that the PS4 is leading the Xbox One in overall console sales since their debut over a year ago – the fact that Sony claims sales dominance with each passing quarter is probably a good indicator of this. However, Microsoft has most recently cut the Kinect out of its standard bundle and slashed its prices to the point where it now costs less than the PS4 for the first time. Add in America’s most frenetic shopping day of the year, Black Friday, and now you have the perfect situation where it’s possible that the Xbox One outsold the PS4, and as it turns out, it did and by a big margin too. As the infographic above shows, the Xbox One far and away won Black Friday sales with 53% of all console sales on that fateful day. Of notable significance is the fact that 90% of ...
