Elon Musk donates $10 million to Future of Life Institute

Elon Musk donates $10 million to Future of Life Institute to keep AI safe

Elon Musk is pretty much on the cutting edge of what is currently technologically possible, so when he spoke about his concerns about the worryingly fast progression of artificial intelligence (AI), the world started to take notice. Sure enough, Musk isn’t the only intellectual afraid of the moment that AI becomes self-aware – Stephen Hawking has previously voiced that AI could end the human race – but thankfully there are people working to make sure that when AI does reach the “singularity” that they will continue to be beneficial to us instead of trying to overthrow us. One such group is the Future of Life Institute, a body that Musk himself has just donated $10 million to aid their research. Speaking about the donation, FLI co-founder Anthony Aguirre said: This donation will make a major impact. While heavy industry and government investment has finally brought AI from niche academic research to early forms of ...

Elon Musk on Artificial Intelligence: “The pace of progress in artificial intelligence is incredibly fast”

We’ve said it before: Elon Musk is a pretty smart guy (understatement much?). The CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors is essentially what we would liken to a real-life Tony Stark; if he came out wearing an Iron Man suit tomorrow, nobody would be surprised. So when he spoke candidly about artificial intelligence, warning that its progress is much quicker than any of us realize, possibly posing a danger to humanity, we were bound to get more than a little worried. In a series of emails to Edge.org publisher, John Brockman, that were erroneously shared, Musk puts a timeline on when he sees the development of artificial intelligence becoming worrisome. “The risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five year timeframe. 10 years at most… Please note that I am normally super pro technology and have never raised this issue until recent months. This is not a case of crying wolf ...

Elon Musk teases the Tesla Model D and ‘something else’ for announcement on Oct 9th

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, is very smart man, but has proven that he has a sense of humour too. In a recent interview, he claimed he wanted to call the Model III the Model E so that Tesla’s line-up would consist of the Model S, E and X. Yes, that’s right – real life’s Tony Stark is also childish and hilarious. So it’s almost poetic irony that Musk would tweet the following regarding the Tesla Model D‘s announcement: About time to unveil the D and something else pic.twitter.com/qp23yi59i6 — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 2, 2014 The tweet set Twitter on fire, not only because Tesla was about the announce something new, but because of the unintentional suggestiveness of the tweet. Suffice to say Musk eventually realized the hilarity of the tweet and posted: I love the Internet. Comments had me literally ROFL. No, it wasn’t intentional. Glad I didn’t mention the other ...

The Tesla Model III will be Tesla’s entry into mainstream electric cars

There’s been a lot of chatter in the press recently about the Tesla and the Tesla Model S with crazy crashes and lead footed people driving into signs. Now Elon Musk wants to get competitive.  The problem has been its price tag!  The Tesla Model S is not exactly accessible to all walks of life, making its penetration into the mainstream automotive industry somewhat minimal. Cue the $35,000 Tesla Model III. In an interview with AutoExpress, Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, confirmed that Tesla’s third vehicle (after the Model X) is going to be called the Model III: Confirmed: Our Gen III car, due out after Model X, will be named Model 3. http://t.co/PLhUzycSlp pic.twitter.com/noZf17LXre — Tesla Motors (@TeslaMotors) July 16, 2014 The car was previously rumoured to be named the Model E instead, but in a very frank response, Musk revealed exactly why it now called the Model III: “We had the model S for sedan ...
