5 things House of Wolves changed in Destiny

Bravo, Destiny: You’ve put the ‘game’ back in ‘gamers’

There’s something to be said about current video game culture. Without getting into the nasty controversial stuff, gamers have become increasingly reliant on game reviews to help direct their decisions and perceptions of games. Bungie‘s highly anticipated massively-multiplayer-online-shooter-thingy, Destiny, opened its doors to the masses today, and did so without even one game review to its name. Sure it was a risky plan, but I’d say its paid off. As someone who regularly reviews games, I often find myself nitpicking different things about games, whether it be graphics, story, or just general peeves. What happens is that I generally enjoy games less, and that’s not even because it’s my job – it’s more the fact having to analyse the game takes some of the fun out of it. And similarly, I think game reviews do that for general gamers as well, which can somewhat detract from the full game experience ...

Xbox can't advertise Destiny

Clever, backhanded ad points out Xbox can’t advertise Destiny

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will have heard that this year’s (or any year’s) biggest game release, Destiny, is about to happen on September 9th (only 1 day and 12 hours left!!!). You might have noticed, however, that despite the game coming out on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4, advertisements everywhere have centred pretty heavily on the Sony consoles’ release, with Xbox ads almost non-existent. As we know, Bungie and Sony have cosied up closely for this release with exclusive PS4 console and game bundles, leaving Microsoft’s console out in the rain. So close is that relationship that Xbox can’t advertise Destiny at all, a point it hilariously pointed out in some ads in the U.K. this week (see above). Xbox U.K. this week posted a series of advertisements promoting a new perfume called “Destiny“. Of course, there is no perfume, but presumably the opportunity to ...

New NBA 2K15 trailer coins the term ‘Yakkem’

The NBA 2K series has stood head and shoulders above the competition when it comes to basketball simulation games for years now and their annual offering, NBA 2K15, is about to release, looking pretty snazzy in its first full trailer. Check it out below: Showing snippets of ESPN favourites, Ernie Johnson and the original Superman, Shaquille O’Neal, the video also delves into some delicious looking gameplay with character models bordering on uncanny. Whether the dynamic duo will feature just in pre- and post-game analyses of the game, or throughout it as well, remains to be seen. The game also focuses much of its snippets on cover athlete, last year’s MVP, Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder. The NBA 2K series goes through intense scrutiny every year, partly because they are so far ahead of their direct competitor, the NBA Live series by EA Sports, and partly because the game is already ...

Destiny Launch gameplay trailer

The official Destiny Launch gameplay trailer takes off, makes the wait to release a little less painful

If there’s anything that was widely felt after the Destiny Beta, it was that the official release of the game on September 9th was much too far away. Now that the game is only 16 days, 8 hours and 55 minutes away (not that I’m counting), Bungie and Activision have decided to satiate our hunger for the game a little more by releasing the official Destiny Launch gameplay trailer. Check it out below: Quite a lot of the gameplay clips we’ve spotted at one time or another in some of the other Destiny trailers – as well as many of the press quotes – but for many of the faithful, they could have made a trailer made of completely re-used clips and we would still be happy. The one thing that this trailer does do is pull together all the bits of the game that they have been teasing separately for some time ...

Explore The Red Planet in the new Destiny Mars Gameplay Trailer

Not that I’m counting, but there are only 23 days, 9 hours until Destiny is officially released, and boy is there a lot of anticipation around the web. Although we’ve likely only seen a small portion of the gameplay and story that will be afforded to us in the full game, that hasn’t stopped us poring over every detail of the beta and what little information we have. To help satiate our thirst for gameplay snippets, Bungie has released the Destiny Mars gameplay trailer, which takes us through some of the landscapes and enemies you’ll be facing on The Red Planet. Check it out: Mars, of course, isn’t the only place besides Earth that you’ll get to visit in Destiny; other celestial bodies like Venus and the Moon are also on the navigation charts, with a small number of people getting the opportunity to visit the Moon in a two ...

SharePlay on the PS4

Why I don’t think SharePlay on the PS4 is a good thing for Sony (or developers)

We reported earlier today that Sony announced SharePlay on the PS4 at its press conference at Gamescom 2014, an update which will allow you to share your PS4 experience with your friends who also own a PS4. It’s a brilliant concept: who wouldn’t want an easier, more unique way to play games with their friends? While it’s definitely a fantastic feature for us, the gamers, it’s got me thinking about how this might pan out for Sony. Let me elaborate. Firstly, I’m making a broad, conservative assumption that the SharePlay feature is restricted to games that have local co-op modes – something which in itself is a dying genre. The core idea, of course, is that two, or more, people can play the same game instance on their personal console without having purchased the game itself, as long as their friends own it and are playing at the same time. Again, this sounds perfect, however, this ...

Gamescom 2014: Sony announces PS4 SharePlay in upcoming Update 2.0

If you weren’t aware, the biggest gaming convention in the world, Gamescom, is currently underway in Cologne, Germany. Earlier today were the press conferences for both Microsoft and Sony, who announced a whole slew of new hardware, software and updates that are coming for their next-gen consoles, the Xbox One and PS4. Sony’s conference came after Microsoft’s, and their announcements for the PS4 detailed the changes that are incoming for system version 2.0, including PS4 SharePlay. The premise of SharePlay will allow you to share your gaming experience with your friends, even if they don’t own the game. Sony elaborates in their blog post: “The best way to think about Share Play is like a “virtual couch”. PlayStation 4 will create an online local co-op experience by allowing you to invite a friend to join your game—even when they don’t own a copy of it. With this first-of-its-kind feature, you’ll ...

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare multiplayer

Jetpacks and tsunamis: Call of Duty Advanced Warfare multiplayer revealed in new trailer

We were promised Call of Duty Advanced Warfare multiplayer footage, and Activision and Sledgehammer Games have delivered. Today, the multiplayer trailer for this year’s Call of Duty entry was released, and what an explosive and intense trailer it is. Check it out below: Jetpacks and tsunamis – that is all. But on a more serious note, it looks like developer Sledgehammer Games has really taken the Call of Duty multiplayer formula – which by all accounts was getting a little stale – and has injected it with some much needed innovation in the form of new futuristic weapons and a heavy emphasis on jetpack movements. Even the maps shown in the trailer are a breath of fresh air, particularly the map where a tsunami arrives and the fights can be taken into the water. There’s definitely a lot to get excited by in this latest Call of Duty, which for this ...

GTA V to get Limited Edition soundtrack box sets

Amazon.de lets slip November 14th as GTA V release date on Xbox One and PS4

The big question on the lips of GTA fans is: what is the GTA V release date on PC, Xbox One and PS4. Well, if Amazon.de – Amazon’s German branch – is anything to go by, GTA V is going to release on those platforms on November 14th. The find was made by Xboxygen who were able to make the observation before Amazon.de removed that information, leaving just the listing. This of course comes after a listing a few weeks ago which seemed to suggest the release was happening on November 7th. Either way, given the number of rumours and listings with either November 7th or 14th listed as its release date, it seems extremely likely that we will be playing GTA V when either of these dates roll by. With that in mind, it shouldn’t be too long before Rockstar Games comes out with the official release date in ...

Take-Two announces Evolve will be delayed to February 2015

The end of 2014 has been shaping up to be a gaming-apalooza to be remembered; games like Destiny and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare threaten to rob us of family time when the Holidays come to pass. Unfortunately, though, one game will have to be scratched from that list. It has been announced that 2K Games and Turtle Rock‘s latest title Evolve will be delayed from its original October 2014 release to February 2015. This change was announced as part of Take-Two Interactive‘s financial report (Take-Two wholly owns the publisher of Evolve, 2K Games). While that’s certainly disappointing for many gamers, like myself, who have been madly obsessing over recently released gameplay footage, Take-Two President, Karl Slatoff gave a very sound reason for not releasing Evolve this year. They said they had: “primarily decided the title deserves and should have more time to be polished so it can reach its absolute optimal state before we release ...
